Coho salmon or silver salmon were the first species of salmon planted in the great lakes. They were planted in the Platte River in the early 1960s. They are smaller then their cousins, the chinook, but make up for it in their aggressiveness and acrobatics when hooked.

They follow the same life cycle as king salmon. However they tend to spawn later and some rivers receive large runs in late November through Christmas time. These fish are a blast to fight on light tackle and put on a real show when hooked.

During their Lake Michigan phase, Coho Salmon have silver sides and dark blue backs. During their spawning phase, the jaws and teeth of the coho become hooked. Coho Salmon develop bright red sides, bluish green heads and backs, dark bellies and dark spots on their backs. Sexually maturing Coho Salmon develop a light pink or rose shading along the belly and the males may show a slight arching of the back.
